I made this bag out of a children's dress, which I made 7 years ago, and which both my daughters have worn. I moved the straps, cut the bottom and wrinkled it - after that I sew it together in the bottom. Most of the architecture of the dress is intact - the bib is now the flap. So the front of the bag was actually the back of the dress. The hardest (but still easy) part was sewing in the lining - I made a roug pattern by drawing the outline of the skirt after it had been wrinkled and sewn. I sew it in making sure to sew on top of the original sewing. Last step: I attached an (invisible) snap and moved a button to the middle of the flap. Only new materials for this were the snap, fabric (from an old pillowcase) for the lining, and sewing thread.
My girls enjoy seeing me run around with their old dress.

I'm entering this in the whiplash july competition in the category 'Fancy'. Mainly because it doesn't fit in the category 'skill' or 'tutorial' (how could you write up a clear tutorial for this? It depends on the dress!).

and a flower:

Koselig bilde i gresset!
That is so pretty! What a good idea. I have 2 younger girls ages 3 and 4. The 3 year old has outgrown some of her summer dresses. This is a great idea - I think I iwll have to try making a bag. Did you use a pattern or just create your own?
thanks for the comments. Midgeling, no, I didn't use a pattern. I sew the bottom together, moved the straps, sew them together and added a snap closure and a lining. This dress was perfekt to make bag of. It was a bib dress, the bib is now the flap of the bag.

:-)
Ble det noe klarere??
What a beautiful idea! You've created something really special and it's pretty too!
